Develop a Year-Round RCIA Process (webinar recording)
Date: October 25, 2012. Join Nick Wagner and Diana Macalintal as they look at how moving to a year-round catechumenate process can begin to solve many common problems we encounter in the RCIA.
Many of us have experienced telling an inquirer to “come back in September” because that’s when RCIA starts. And, of course, they almost never do.
Many more of us have sat in empty meeting rooms waiting for the neophytes to show up for mystagogy.
And I’m sure a lot of us have celebrated sacraments with catechumens and candidates we knew in our hearts were not yet ready.
In this TeamRCIA webinar, Nick Wagner and Diana Macalintal will look at how moving to a year-round catechumenate process can begin to solve these problems. Specifically, we will discuss:
- Why an ongoing, year-round catechumenate is important to your parish
- What we mean when we say “year-round”
- How to implement an ongoing, year-round process
- What the long-term implications are of moving to a year-round process

Introducing Friends on the Way: Children’s Catechumenate Resource (webinar recording)
The webinar is over. But don’t worry. We recorded it for you. You can watch it, free, here!
Description:
Janet Miller, author and designer of Friends on the Way, gives us a complete walk-through of this simple, concrete, comprehensive catechesis for child catechumens.
Friends on the Way is a simple, concrete, comprehensive catechesis for child catechumens. Janet Miller, has put together an amazing set of materials that you can put directly in the hands of your children’s RCIA catechists.
Friends on the Way includes a dismissal session and a catechetical session for every Sunday of the liturgical year. In the course of the year, children learn about the entire mystery of faith. And each session includes a direct link to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Also, you can use Friends on the Way to help the parents catechize their children—even if the parents’ level of faith-knowledge is not very strong. Each session includes an optional intergenerational activity that will get the whole family interacting together plus a reproducible handout for families to take home, which helps them pray, share faith, and put that faith into action.
The best thing about Friends on the Way is that it is completely electronic. That means you download each session directly to your computer as a PDF file, and you keep that file on your computer as long as you want. Plus, you have our permission to forward that file and to print as many copies as you like for each of the catechists on your team.
Sneak preview of Friends on the Way
Janet is working on the sessions for Year A as we speak. Advent is finished and available now. Christmastide and Winter Ordinary Time are soon to follow. We wanted to let you know about this now so we can give you an advance look. Click here for a free sample (PDF, 478 kb) and take a look for yourself.
For more information on ordering Year A of Friends on the Way, go to this Web page. And if you are not directly involved in the children’s catechumenate, please forward this information to someone who is. They’re going to want to know!
Joint RCIA Formation: Catechizing the catechized and uncatechized together (webinar recording)
Date: May 23, 2012. Join Diana Macalintal and Nick Wagner for this webinar where we explore how to prepare a catechetical session that will meet the needs of the diverse people we meet in the RCIA.
It’s the third Wednesday of the month, and that means it’s your turn to lead the catechumenate session. Your group includes, at one end of the spectrum, an unbaptized single mother who has trouble understanding “this whole three-persons-in-one-God” thing.
At the other end is a Baptist former seminarian who is preparing to marry a faithful Catholic woman. He has been at Sunday Mass—and often weekday Mass—every week for the last two years. He is also good friends with the pastor, and they frequently discuss articles from America magazine together.
And then there are several folks between those two extremes. How can you possibly prepare a catechetical session that will meet the needs of these diverse people?
That’s exactly the question we’ll tackle in Joint RCIA formation: Catechizing the catechized and uncatechized together—our next TeamRCIA webinar. Join Nick Wagner and Diana Macalintal for an in-depth look at these topics:
- Why it is crucial to distinguish between the catechized and uncatechized in faith formation
- What the RCIA means, exactly, by “catechized,” “uncatechized,” and how you can discern the difference
- A thorough overview of how to catechize both the catechized and the uncatechized—even if your team is small
- The “so what?”—a discussion about the benefits to your initiation process if you clarify your catechetical focus

The secret to teaching adults in the RCIA (webinar recording)
Date: March 8, 2012. Join Nick Wagner and Diana Macalintal for a one-hour online workshop to learn about the distinct learning needs and learning styles of adults.
Has this ever happened to you? It was your turn to lead the catechetical session for your initiation process. You gave a stellar presentation on the distinctions between sanctifying and actual grace. You used an animated PowerPoint; you provided a step-by-step handout. You even managed to inject a little humor.
Then, at the end of your 45 minutes, you asked if there are any questions. And…nothing. Crickets chirped quietly outside the classroom window.
Did they get it? Did they understand what you were telling them? Will it make any difference in their lives? How do you know? How do you know if you are having any impact at all on the faith lives of the catechumens?
When it comes to teaching adults, we have to switch gears. Adults have distinct learning needs and learning styles. In this 60-minute online workshop, Nick Wagner and Diana Macalintal will explore:
- Why using an adult-learning model is essential for catechumenate formation
- What adult learning looks like
- How to lead a catechetical session using adult learning methods
- What the impact of an adult learning process might be for your parish

Year of Faith: A Catechetical Vision (webinar recording)
Date: November 6, 2012. Join Nick Wagner and Diana Macalintal to renew your own sense of joy and enthusiasm for the important task of teaching the faith in this Year of Faith.
Pope Benedict XVI challenges every believer “to rediscover the content of the faith that is professed, celebrated, lived and prayed, and to reflect on the act of faith” so that we might be credible witnesses (Porta fidei, 9).
The pope also says that to make a credible profession of faith, we need conviction, confidence, and hope.
This webinar will give you a deeper understanding of the goals and actions of the teaching authorities of the post-Vatican II Church.
Specifically, we will discuss:
- The complimentary but distinct roles of directories and catechisms in faith formation
- The two key documents that provide the fulcrum for today’s faith formation efforts
- The four central components of Christian life that make up all faith formation
- The most successful example of post-Vatican II faith formation in action
- The U.S. bishops’ plan for implementing a parish-wide renewal process
This webinar originally aired on November 6, 2012. The full video/audio recording includes a downloadable handout and recommended resources.
